Propane Powered

One of the biggest benefits of using a jiffy ice auger is that it’s operated with the help of propane, which essentially eliminates maintenance and the potential for flooding.

In addition, you do not have to deal with any gas fumes or cans, so you can use it in your ice house or shanty.

Engine

The jiffy 46-Xtreme has a 49cc, four-stroke engine which helps to support its claim of being powerful. With this tool, you’ll also be able to get started with just one to two pulls, meaning, it is quite easy to get going.

Comfort Grip Handles

The handles are wide to help you with control while the blades are an improvement over previous models. The ripper blade is serrated, and the power point blades are also an upgrade.

Blade

You should expect to get some long blade life out of this auger, even with the increased power for cutting. The new serrated cutting edge made quick work out of the ice.  You can also switch out blades super fast thanks to the quick connect collar.

Warranty

You get a two-year limited warranty, so you can feel like your purchase is protected. You get plenty of options as well since it is available in four different drill sizes.

Weight

We don’t see a lot of drawbacks with this product aside from the weight, which can be a struggle for some. In addition, you might be challenged trying to start it in very cold weather.

It’s marketed as always starting right away and it mostly does, but not when it’s particularly cold.

Who Should buy a jiffy Ice Auger?

jiffy propane augers are for the ice fisher who is really looking for some incredible power. This is marketed to be the most powerful propane auger currently available.

So, if you are looking for absolute maximum performance, this is a great option. It allows you to drill quickly, cleanly, and easily in almost any condition.

The 46-Xtreme cuts through the ice like butter, making drilling easy and manageable. With that said, it is a bit on the heavier side when it comes to its weight.

If you’re looking for an ultra-lightweight auger, this probably isn’t the model for you.

What’s Included with Your 46-Xtreme

With this jiffy propane ice auger, you will also receive the plastic blade protector. Given the propane fuel you will use with this product, you do not need much else.

Maintenance is virtually nonexistent, so you shouldn’t need to purchase many, if any, accessories. Get your fuel and you are good to go.

Shop Around: jiffy Propane Ice Auger vs Eskimo

These two augers are actually made by the same company: go figure!  Each one has it’s pros and cons though so we had to compare them!

Based on our Jiffy 46X-Treme 10” Ice Auger testing, the biggest drawback we can find with this model is its weight. It is not particularly light which won’t cause an issue for everyone.

Nevertheless, if you are someone who can’t manage the extra weight, like maybe your threw your back out a few too many times, you might be in the market for an ice auger which is a bit lighter.

If you want to stick with the propane-powered auger, a lighter option would be an auger from the Eskimo Propane HC40.  These augers also come with a five-year warranty, so you can purchase without much worry.

The big difference is that the series starts with a weight of just 26 pounds. Those six pounds can make quite a difference, especially when it comes to drilling a few dozen holes. Over time, six pounds can end up feeling like a whole lot more.

If you don’t care if your auger is propane or not, you can definitely get a lighter auger which runs off a different battery source. One example is the Eskimo FI Rocket 33cc Viper which runs on gas.

This is a pretty reliable auger even in cold weather, and it has a redesigned engine along with an all-metal streamlined transmission for faster speed. You won’t have much trouble starting it when it’s cold.

There are drawbacks to gas augers are just like anything else but this model will eliminate the heaviness problem of the jiffy ice auger.

jiffy Ice Auger Conclusion

Buying an ice auger can be a real investment, as you will likely be keeping it for a while. Therefore, you want to be sure you are choosing the one that best fits your style and needs.

With this Jiffy ice auger, you are getting a whole lot of power. If that’s what you need and are looking for, you really can’t go wrong with this purchase, especially given the five-year warranty that protects your purchase.
